Barnard College is a prestigious women’s liberal arts college in New York City. Barnard has a long-standing and close partnership with its neighbor Columbia University, which means students get the advantages of a small, liberal arts school and a large Ivy League university. Barnard is known for its commitment to empowering women through education. Its academics are liberal arts focused and encourage collaboration between students and exploration between majors. Some of Barnard's most popular majors include economics, english, political science, psychology, sociology, biology, and environmental science.
Barnard offers students access to hands-on learning through internships, student jobs, and experiences. Popular internships include finance internships at prestigious firms, media internships within the communications industry, and nonprofit internships with advocacy groups.
The overall campus experience at Barnard is characterized by a strong sense of community and inclusivity. Most students live on campus and participate in clubs, student events, and activities. Barnard encourages students to follow their passions and take advantage of how New York City can help develop those skills.
Barnard does not have its own varsity athletic teams, but students can join Columbia University’s athletic programs. Columbia competes at the NCAA Division I level and Barnard students who try out and are selected for a sport will join the Columbia team as full members. Barnard students can also join club and intramural sports in partnership with Columbia - these sports provide students with less competitive, more relaxed team experiences. Popular club sports for Barnard students include rugby, soccer, tennis, and ultimate frisbee.
In the spirit of collaboration for which the college is known, Barnard offers several unique learning opportunities that allow students to also study at Columbia, Julliard, and Manhattan School of Music. Barnard’s partnership with Columbia University allows students to take classes at either campus and even participate in joint degree programs and earn degrees from Barnard and Columbia at the same time. Barnard also offers two programs that provide students the opportunity to attend Julliard through an exchange program or a joint Bachelors/Masters program. And through a cross-registration program, Barnard students can audition for and study through Manhattan School of Music with no additional charge.
"One attraction to Barnard is indeed the integration with Columbia University: its campus, facilities, sports, course catalog, programs, location (in the city, and within the city), and the social options (ability to make friends) because of the large university setting. But far from being a “back-door” to Columbia University, it was actually Barnard that was the ‘added benefit.’"
