It’s that time of the year again! The birds are chirping, the sun is out later and our filing cabinet is stacked to the max. As you go through your files, there are 3 categories to consider: Keep, Toss, To-Do.
KEEP any paperwork for things you still own. Hold onto any documentation of the value of stocks, funds or property you are currently holding for an additional three years and keep tax returns themselves, indefinitely.
TOSS outdated and expired documents. People can better protect themselves and prevent thieves from stealing personal information from mailboxes and trash by shredding these documents.
We are hosting a free document Shred Day on Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of our Brentwood office located at 2345 South Brentwood. Both members and non-members are invited and encouraged to bring sensitive documents they no longer need.
To-Do unfinished paperwork into stacks and keep a calender of tasks that are usually neglected (i.e “Scan receipts). This might help you keep your sanity if you don’t have the time for a filing day marathon.
If you are on a roll and don’t want to stop there, start cleaning out your wallet or purse. There may be forgotten receipts, gift cards or important papers you’ve thought lost. Gift cards lose value over time, so if you’ve lost interest in using them, consider selling them!
Happy Spring Cleaning!
